Tinubu also appointed a new board for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the president's spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale said in a statement. Days earlier, official data showed oil production in the third-quarter rose from a year earlier level that was vastly reduced by massive oil theft.

Kyari was expected to go as Tinubu's reshuffled officials inherited from his predecessor. President Tinubu suspended former central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele in June. After that, the state police detained and charged him with procurement fraud. The head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa was also suspended indefinitely for abuse of office. Angola overtook Nigeria as Africa's biggest oil producer and exporter for a few months last year. Nigeria has made producing its own fuels a priority for years but efforts have failed to revamp its state-owned refineries with a combined capacity of 445,000 barrels per day. The country relies almost entirely on importing refined products.
